WWE Attitude Era Divas: Looking at the Past and Present

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

The WWE Attitude Era Divas were as important as their male counterparts. For the first time in the company’s history, they weren’t just eye candy, but grapplers as well. The women of the WWE from 1996 until 2001 were a part of a golden age. They were no longer an afterthought, but a huge part of the show.

They were involved in storylines that shaped the company and competed in matches that were as violent and athletic as the men. Sometimes they wrestled the men. Nearly all of these women are now gone from the WWE, but where are they now?

Top 15 Divas Halloween Costumes

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

Like eggnog on Christmas or Turkey on Thanksgiving, WWE Divas in costumes is an annual tradition that best embodies that spirit of Halloween—gorgeous women in skimpy outfits. Though this year may lack a Divas battle royal, the stage where Divas flaunt their lovely outfits, there are plenty of past outfits to admire. Both creative and appealing, WWE Divas sure know how to express their imaginative side through the use of costumes.

WWE RAW Results: AJ Lee resigns as General Manager, Vickie Guerrero Appointed as “Managing Supervisor.” Plus Catfights Galore

WWE Divas – October 22, 2012 Segment:
AJ Lee Resigns as Raw General Manager, Vickie Guerrero appointed as Managing Supervisor

—On Raw, we saw AJ Lee resign, due to allegations of “fraternizing with a Superstar on the roster.” The segment with Vince McMahan, saw a very emotional speech from AJ Lee. Vince later announced Vickie Guerrero as the the Managing Supervisor. By the end of the segment, AJ was free to put her hands on Vickie Guerrero, to the delight of all us fans…

Eve Torres was seen backstage on the phone—gossiping about AJ, when Kaitlyn approached from behind. Kaitlyn accused Eve of setting-up the attack on her at WWE Night of Champions, and showed her a photo of the evidence—apparently an email, that she captured on Eve’s ipad on last week’s Smackdown! (WWE Divas – October 19, 2012 Smackdown Results). A few choice words from Kaitlyn to Eve led to Eve slapping the holy hell out of Kaitlyn. This led to a catfight, in which Layla attempted to break-up. After pulling Kaitlyn off-of Eve, Layla was shoved by Eve, prompting Layla to renege on playing peacemaker. A two-on-one attack on Eve led to referees quickly having to break-up the conflict…

Why Eve Torres Is the Perfect Champion for a Rebuilding WWE Divas Division

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

The Divas division within World Wrestling Entertainment has recently been rocked by the departures of some of its featured performers. The Bella Twins and Kelly Kelly are already out the door and one of the most decorated women in company history, Beth Phoenix, is poised to follow them. Those women follow Michelle McCool, who a year ago left the company and has yet to express any desire to return. The Kharma experiment proved to be problematic and the release of Melina and Mickie James in recent years has left an eclectic group of women.

Why Eve Torres Is the Perfect Champion for a Rebuilding WWE Divas Division

Layla returned to the company earlier this spring and captured the Divas Championship but lack of focus on the division by the creative team left her with little to do. AJ Lee, the most prominently-featured woman on WWE programming, was mixed up in the WWE Championship picture and has recently assumed the role of general manager. Kaitlyn has been surging as of late and is seemingly being prepared for a push of some sort.

Alicia Fox and Natalya are veterans but are constantly fighting for the very limited real estate women are allotted on WWE programming while Naomi and Cameron are stuck in the role of backup dancers for Brodus Clay.

That leaves the one woman that is perfect to fill the role of centerpiece of the Divas division while it rebuilds and that one woman is the current Divas Champion, Eve Torres.

Eve is a complete performer. She has constantly improved her in-ring work and has exhibited a charisma that allows the audience to connect with her current character, that of a manipulative scheming villainess. She has embraced her heel turn from earlier this year and has become one of the few women that generates a very vocal reaction from every audience she performs in front of. Only AJ and Vickie Guerrero can boast the same.

The 2007 Diva Search winner is also a tremendous representative for the company. As someone who has a degree in engineering, is very intelligent and fights for female empowerment, she is not the typical model-turned-wrestler. She is well-spoken and carries herself with class and dignity, as do most of the Divas.

At a time when there is great uncertainty surrounding the Divas division, and the state of women’s wrestling in WWE in general, Eve as the piece that the entire Divas roster rotates around is not only the safest choice but also the best. Is Natalya a better in-ring worker? Yes, but she has had opportunities in the past and, for whatever reason, fans have not connected with her as one would have hoped. Is Kaitlyn fresh and new and, potentially, the future of the division? Yes. But Eve is the heel that can carry the division until the company trusts a babyface Diva to finally knock her off her pedestal. That woman could come from developmental or from somewhere else.

But until someone can clearly be “The Diva" going forward, the best all-around performer should be the centerpiece of women’s sports-entertainment in WWE and, for now, the best is Eve.

WWE Studios Planning 'The Marine 4'; Diva to Star?

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

WWE Studios Planning 'The Marine 4'; Diva to Star?Last week, current WWE Divas champion Eve Torres suggested in an interview to pop culture site With Leather that she could star in The Marine 4, a proposed installment of the WWE Studios action movie franchise. Such a part would make her the first Diva to snag a role in a WWE film; up until now, it's just been the guys who've been chosen to participate in the various projects.

Hey, it sounds like a intriguing idea, and certainly Torres' natural charisma and impressive victory on NBC military-reality show Stars Earn Stripes earlier this year makes her a ideal candidate for such a role. But it was just wishful thinking on her part, right?

Well, apparently not. Per PWInsider (via Wrestling Inc), the folks at WWE Studios are, in fact, considering producing a fourth Marine film, with a Diva, likely Eve, starring in it:

This could potentially be a big deal for Torres. Sure, the Marine films are mediocre at best, often filled with bad and unconvincing acting, far too many explosions and hilariously similar plots (someone is always trying to get a kidnapped female family member back). But the franchise remains the cornerstone of the struggling film division, with the first couple of Marine movies being two of only three WWE Studios to ever make a profit.

The third installment of the franchise, The Marine: Homefront, starring Mike "The Miz" Mizanin is due out this spring (via The Miz on Twitter). And with a talented director in The Condemned's Scott Wiper and an appealing leading man (on-set photos show Miz looking enough like classic '80s action star Michael Biehn to make you think he can pull this off) should hopefully deliver good results too.

That WWE would be willing to trust Torres with such an important role speaks volumes about the company's faith in her and her abilities. Using a female Marine for the first time is also an interesting and original concept that could revamp the series, as well as setting a good example to the company's young female fans, many of whom look up to Divas like Torres and would love to see her play an empowered woman in a feature film. It sounds like a great idea on paper. But what would the plot be? Wait. I got it.

WWE Raw Results: Best Matches and Moments from the Latest Episode

Posted in : News, Raw

(added few months ago!)

An episode that centered around who CM Punk will face at Hell in a Cell featured a number of entertaining matches and segments from unlikely sources. Ryback is in fact Hell in a Cell bound with John Cena's fervent approval. Regardless of how fans think his career should be booked and if he's ready, it's Punk and Ryback time in two weeks.

WWE Raw Results: Best Matches and Moments from the Latest Episode

This Raw helped build momentum for the other matches that will be featured on the pay-per-view. Big Show did his best to get a buzz going for his match. Miz and Kofi Kingston took center stage. Unfortunately, what could have been a spectacular main event was cancelled and rescheduled due to Rey Mysterio apparently being ill. The Rhodes Scholars instead dominated Primo and Epico. Jinder Mahal's turban and leather jacket combo is not on the list, but Raw gave us several other memorable moments.

WWE Should Drop the Divas Title for Something Better: The Women's Championship

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

WWE Should Drop the Divas Title for Something Better: The Women's ChampionshipThe first thing that the WWE needs to do to revive the women’s division is to get rid of the Divas title and bring back the Women’s Championship. To put it bluntly, if the WWE wants the division to be taken seriously, it needs a serious title to attract the best women wrestlers.

The Divas Championship is a slightly offensive poor excuse for a belt. Leaving behind a ridiculously named title in the dust and bringing back the one with real history tied to it is a must if the WWE Universe is to take women’s wrestling seriously again.

Yes, the two titles were unified back in 2010 in a Lumberjills match when Michelle McCool defeated Melina, but really, what is a title unification match in the WWE? It’s an excuse to retire one title for another and try to bring legitimacy to the new title. But make no mistake; the Divas Championship is not the Women’s Championship.

What happened with the women's titles is the same thing that happened when the WWE World Title was unified with the WCW World Title. A new title wasn’t created. It was still the World Championship (even if they called it the Unified World Championship).

The WWE World Title was not suddenly the same belt that Ric Flair won or the same one that adorned the waists of Sting, Vader and Jeff Jarrett in WCW. Heck, even the WCW title had no real lineage with the NWA Championship, a belt that went back to George Hackenschmidt in 1904.

The Divas title is a hollow shell of a belt that really means nothing. The WWE has a habit of unifying or simply ending their older championships in favor of new ones, seemingly in order to have a tournament or a grand match to name a new champion.

The WWE Women’s Championship has ties back to one of the greatest titles of all time, the NWA World Women’s Title. The number of legends who have held the WWE Women’s Championship is a mile long: Fabulous Moolah, Wendi Richter, Rockin’ Robin, Sheri Martel, Alundra Blaze, Jazz, Victoria, and Trish and Lita to name a few.

Would any of these women have been caught dead wearing the Divas title around their waist?

Even today's great wrestlers like Beth Phoenix and Natalya look uncomfortable with the pretty butterfly belt. A third generational wrestler like Natalya deserves to be a Women's Champion, not a diva. Sadly, what is sorely apparent is that today's women’s division is a poor shell of a bad imitation of itself.

It is populated with so-called divas that can neither wrestle or talk and appear to have walked straight out of a swimsuit calendar. It’s a shameful state for the division to be in, considering some of the all-time greats came through there, including Trish Stratus and Lita.

Some of the greatest matches have been fought over this title, including the Original Screwjob and just about any match with Trish Stratus during her seven reigns. If the WWE wants this division to be taken seriously, this is a great first step. Hiring Sara Del Rey is another great move.

WWE: Why Jerry Lawler Would Be a Better Fit on SmackDown

Posted in : News, SmackDown, Superstars

(added few months ago!)

WWE: Why Jerry Lawler Would Be a Better Fit on SmackDownThe WWE Universe is incredibly happy that Jerry Lawler's progress—after unfortunately having a heart attack during an episode of Raw—is going very well. He will receive an amazing (and well-deserved) pop when he returns to Raw in Memphis.

But let's face it—the commentary team the past few weeks has been gold. Michael Cole, Jim Ross and JBL are an amazing trio. Cole, as the anchor doing the play-by-play, Ross, with his classic and exciting match-calling and JBL, with his great history lessons that can make even Yoshi Tatsu look like a megastar and his heelish comments.

Imagine him saying—regarding Yoshi Tatsu—"Former Japan Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Champion." "Former Asian Express Wrestling Triple Crown winner." "Former Eastern Hemisphere Wrestling Global Heavyweight Champion."These are of course phantom promotions, but JBL has something for everyone.

Jim Ross is exactly what Raw needs to make Ryback a star. Did you see how crazy Raw was at the end when Ryback came to the ring? The commentary by JR when Ryback clotheslined CM Punk was amazing. It was also a good decision for the camera to shake as well. Respectfully, Jerry Lawler would be a much better fit on SmackDown.

Since Booker T is no longer commentating, the pairing of Michael Cole and Josh Matthews is quite odd, and does nothing to further cause intrigue to the already lackluster SmackDown we have seen as of late. This wouldn't be a knock to Lawler.

We know he is a Raw guy, but so was JR before he was drafted to SmackDown. Lawler as an addition to the SmackDown team would definitely bring a boost to the subpar team that already exists. Lawler could still have his spot on pay-per-views, along with JR and Cole.

WWE: Why It's Time to End the Divas Title

Posted in : Divas, News

(added few months ago!)

Something has become clear in recent times. It is time, once and for all, to put WWE's struggling Divas Division out of its misery.

WWE: Why It's Time to End the Divas Title

Frankly, this has been coming for a while. While women's wrestling has never been taken terribly seriously in the company, over the past year and a half, the WWE Divas Championship—and therefore, the division—has plummeted to the depths of irrelevancy.

With the exception of AJ Lee—currently serving as Raw GM—and Eve Torres, the women in the company all struggle greatly to get air-time on WWE programming, with talented athletes like Natalya, Tamina Snuka and Beth Phoenix often consigned to little-watched Internet-only shows like Superstars.

There have been no major angles for the Divas either. Any time anything interesting does come up, it's quickly swept under the rug and forgotten about. Hey, anyone remember when Pin up Strong—the team of Phoenix of Natalya—were going to take over the division and get rid of all models they despised? Or Alicia Fox claiming she was on a quest to take Phoenix’s title?

Oh, sure. The current “Who Attacked Kaitlyn at Night of Champions?” angle is intriguing, but it remains to be seen whether WWE's creative team will drop this angle before it's properly resolved, like they've done with several Diva storylines in the past.

As for in-ring time to show off what they can do? The girls barely get that either, with most women's matches on Raw and Smackdown lasting about two minutes.

When they are afforded the luxury of performing on pay-per-view, they almost always get stuck in a terrible, unenviable spot (like right after a major match), meaning the crowd in attendance is usually too distracted to care about the match taking place.

Being Divas Champion—a title which isn't exactly considered prestigious by critics and fans—doesn't help either.

Indeed, as Divas Champion, Beth Phoenix had one of the longest women's title runs in WWE history in late 2011/early 2012, but she was barely on TV and neglected by the booking team for so long many even forgot she held the title.

All this shoddy treatment is considered even worse when you remember that WWE moved to three hours in July. Yes, WWE has more airtime than they know what to do with and still won't put any time into the division.

So let’s be brutally honest: This division is going absolutely nowhere. Going by the huge amount of women exiting the company (Maryse, The Bella Twins, Gail Kim. Maxine and Kelly Kelly have all left WWE in the past year—Beth Phoenix is reportedly finishing up too), the girls know it too.

That Triple H—next in line to run the company after Vince—has, per an interview with a former writer, been a vocal critic of giving the girls airtime in booking meetings only helps to ensure that things won’t change any time in the future.

With this in mind, getting rid of Divas Championship might be the best course of action. Frankly, if you're going to have a women's title, treat it—and the people who will hold it—with a modicum of respect, or don't have one at all.

One comparison to bring up is with WWE's now-defunct Cruiserweight Championship. The title was long treated as a joke (comedy act Hornswaggle even had a lengthy run with it), and few shed any tears when management finally jettisoned the belt in 2008.

Frankly, it was a waste of the company’s time, and getting rid of the belt allowed the cruiserweights, like Chavo Guerrero and Evan Bourne, to move on and to other, better things in the mid-card and tag team ranks.

Similarly free of the hindrance of competing for a sham belt, the women in WWE would be free to do other things. The girls could still wrestle, of course, but some of them could move on to managing. Look at how great this worked out for Rosa Mendes, who went from being under-utilised and practically invisible as as a wrestler to being a valuable part of the roster as the manager to Epico and Primo.

It’s difficult to say whether WWE will take my advice and discard the floundering Divas Championship. But hopefully they change something—because what they’re doing now is not working.
