“Mean Gene” Okerlund introduced WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young, and she was accompanied by The Bella Twins. Mae Young announced that she will be wrestling until she was 100… a video package was then shown highlighting some very over the top WWE moments. Lay-Cool then interrupted, with some very harsh words for Mae Young. Mae then challenged the ladies to a match… a falls count anywhere, no disqualification match.
As the bell rang, Gail Kim, Melina, Eve, and Natalya made their way from backstage on to the ramp. Michelle and Layla attempted to run away; however, they were ambushed from behind by the Divas…Eve and Melina held Layla so than Mae Young could slap the taste out of her mouth. Natalya then clotheslined her to the floor. Mae then put her foot on top of Layla, and the referee made the 3-count for the win.
As amusing as some parts of the segment was… such as Mae’s comments to Lay-Cool and her slap to Layla, the booking was a bit redundant and predictable. We have seen these type of segments before with Mae Young (As with the late Fabulous Moolah). It would have been nice to see other former Female talent utilized on a show like this. Women who were actually showcased in the WWE in the 80’s and 90’s, and not one who was brought in in 1999 as a novelty act. The segment was great for what it was, but it did nothing for Lay-Cool’s credibility going into Survivor Series against Natalya. It will be interesting to see what happens on Smackdown going into Survivor Series.
WSU returns live on December 11, in New Jersey, with a main event of Alicia versus Nikki Roxx. The show will take place at The Dunellen Knights of Columbus in Dunellen, NJ. Here is the full card:
